Dolphin Hydrophone User Guide

Please note that these instructions are valid during the period when the hand scanner is being used to listen to the signal being transmitted from South Kessock. Once the custom built aerial has been installed, the instructions will be updated to reflect the additional facilities and features which will then be available.

The hand scanner is normally kept in the top drawer of the filing cabinet and whilst it is battery powered, it is better to power it from the mains using the cable which plugs in to a socket on the side of the device. The batteries were replaced recently so it will not be a problem to unplug the power lead and take the unit outside if required.

It is powered on by turning the middle control knob which is found on the top of the device. This know also adjusts the volume.

Before use, the aerial should be fully extended and after use, the aerial should be fully retracted.

The unit is 'locked' to a frequency of 200.3 Khz using a locking switch on the side of the unit. This switch should not be moved as that then allows the preset frequency to be altered. The South Kessock transmitter broadcasts at frequency of 200.3 - any deviation from that setting will have the effect of switching off the reception.

Generally speaking the precise position of the scanner is not too important but I suggest that it be placed standing in the corner next to the window to optimise reception.

In the absence of dolphins and their associated sounds, the scanner will pick up the noises of water splashing and gurgling round the South Kessock pier as well as the sounds of passing vessels. Vessels having traditional screw propulsion will have a distinctive sound as opposed to the dolphin tour boat which seems to have some type of hydro drive. If a vessel leaves the canal and heads out under the bridge, it should be possible to listen to the sounds of the propellor(s) even after it passes under the bridge.
